Transparencies and Negatives Collection: Historic photographs. This plat dates to the Rappite period of New Harmonys history. Originally it was the location of Dormitory House No. 4, during the Harmonist Community, and was built in 1824 just before the Rappites left. In 1857 the Dormitory was turned into a theater called the Union Hall which became Thralls Opera House between 1888 and 1893. By 1907 it had become Pratts Opera House. In 1913 the old Opera House was converted into Garrets Conoco garage and filling station. Thralls Opera House: This is the remodeled original Rappite Dormitory House No. 4. It went through many changes during two hundred years of continuous use. In 1857 the building became the Union Hall, the first presentation being Damon and Pythias and in 1879 Will Crisp painted a new stage curtain for the theater. The doors opened at 6:30 pm and the curtain rose at 7:00 pm. By 1893 the theater had been remodeled and had become Thralls Opera House but by 1907 it was known as Pratts Opera House before being converted into a garage in 1913. The last event which was held in the old building was the 1913 New Harmony School Commencement ceremony. The building remained a garage, with one gasoline pump, until sometime before 1943, after which it was used as a fire house by the town. This is a photo of the back side of the building.
