The Working Men's Institute was founded in 1838, by William Maclure, as a library for working people, not just those who were wealthy. Initially there were a total of 160 Working Men's Institutes, 144 in the state of Indiana and 16 in the state of Illinois, however, the one in New Harmony Indiana is the only one which still remains. The present location of the WMI was completed in 1894, now a National Historic Landmark, before this it was housed in the old Harmonist Church from 1834 until the new building was completed. The WMI also houses a museum as well as the oldest working library in the state of Indiana. This photo is of the northeast corner of the WMI. Note the fall color change of the tree leaves. 001551871 542__ $$fhttp://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC-NC/1.0/ 001551871 6531_ $$aBinder 20 001551871 6531_ $$aTown Map 6D/W 001551871 6531_ $$aCommunal Studies 001551871 6531_ $$aPhotographs 001551871 6531_ $$aRegional History 001551871 6531_ $$aRelated Materials -- 1951-2000 001551871 655__ $$aColor Slide 001551871 691__ $$aIndiana 001551871 7001_ $$aHistoric New Harmony 001551871 8564_ $$9488648e0-a0f1-4279-859a-105150ee3b97$$s2843421$$uhttps://library.usi.edu/record/1551871/files/8727.jp2 001551871 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:1551871$$pGLOBAL_SET 001551871 914__ $$ap17218coll9 001551871 980__ $$aHistoric New Harmony Slide Collection 001551871 984__ $$aHistoric New Harmony Slide Collection 001551871 985__ $$aImage
