The Working Men's Institute was founded in 1838, by William Maclure, as a library for working people, not just those who were wealthy. Initially there were a total of 160 Working Men's Institutes, 144 in the state of Indiana and 16 in the state of Illinois, however, the one in New Harmony Indiana is the only one which still remains. The present location of the WMI was completed in 1894, now a National Historic Landmark, before this it was housed in the old Harmonist Church from 1834 until the new building was completed. The WMI also houses a museum as well as the oldest working library in the state of Indiana.
