Description

Chaffin House: This house is located on the northwest corner of Church and First Streets. During the mid and late nineteenth century the property belonged to Thomas Ferguson and there was a house on this plat before the Chaffin House, still present in 2022 albeit somewhat remodeled, was constructed in 1905. Before this time Lycurgus Chaffin owned property on Main Street near the corner with Steam Mill, that house was demolished at some point between March 1913, it can be seen in several flood photos, and the 1929 Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps. This is a photo of the family in their front yard, probably shortly after the house was constructed. Most likely left to right: Clara Emma Baechle Chaffin (4/25/1879 9/8/1933), and Charles Lycurgus Chaffin (1/6/1881 11/30/1955).
