Abstract

The aim of this project is to design and construct an autonomous robot for the 2017 IEEE SouthEastCon Hardware Competition located in Charlotte, North Carolina. This competition consists of an arena where there will be five objectives to complete. The five objectives included classifying unknown circuit elements, turning a rotary encoder knob that tracks position, striking a lightsaber when an electromagnetic field is activated, shooting Nerf darts at a target, and navigating the arena to each objective. The scope of this project included three of the five objectives: navigation, classifying unknown circuit elements, and turning the rotary encoder knob. The design phase of this project involved both the testing of pre-built sensors and components, and the designing of custom hardware. Once the final designs were chosen, fabrication and testing began. Modifications to the designs were made when testing and integrating the various subsystems, resulting in an effective and efficient robot, sufficient to place first in the competition.
