Abstract
The objective of this project is to design a Shared-Use-Pathway (pedestrian trail) in Evansville, IN
along Green River Road from Lynch Road to Millersburg Road. The proposed alignment of the
trail is approximately 2.28 miles with sections of the trail located on both sides of the roadway.
The trail width for both sections of the alignment is 10 feet. Several different aspects of the project
were identified as critically important to the completion of the trail design. Most importantly the
trail must comply with the standards set by the 2013 Indiana Design Manual. The pavement design,
signage and trail cross-sections had to be designed and detailed along the entire plan and profile
of the trail. Also, the trail alignment crosses five separate bodies of water. In response, five
pedestrian bridges with varying spans had to be designed. The width of the trail requires not only
pedestrian loading, but also the loading of a 5-ton truck. Additionally, the existing topography
along portions of the alignment require the construction of retaining walls. Finally, a preliminary
cost estimation of the trail was calculated.
