It suggests answers as to how and why religion became so prominent in human societies and in human consciousness. Neurotheology--a term coined by Aldous Huxley in 1962 in his novel Island and introduced into the scientific literature in the 1990s by Newberg and others--explores some of the most controversial positions including the argument that religion was a necessary condition of cohesive societies, morality, and a sense of purpose. The book considers brain development from an evolutionary perspective and assesses how religious and spiritual beliefs and experiences arose and whether such evolutionary evidence eliminates the need for a religious explanation. Newberg demonstrates that religious beliefs and emotions can be both beneficial and detrimental in people's lives. For some, religion provides a means toward compassion, openness, and understanding; others turn to highly destructive acts, as is the case with suicide bombers. What is happening in the brains of such people? Are they pathological? And what of practices such as meditation, prayer, and the ingestion of psychoactive substances? Neuroimaging studies can show how these practices affect people in the moment and over a lifetime. Finally, the book investigates the deeper implications of a neurotheological approach. Does the neuroscientific study of religion negate any or all of the truth claims of religion? How does neurotheology address the "big questions" such as: What is the meaning of life? Why are we here? And what is the true nature of reality?"--$$cProvided by publisher. 001563155 546__ $$aIn English. 001563155 5880_ $$aOnline resource; title from digital title page (viewed on April 18, 2018). 001563155 650_0 $$aNeurophysiology$$xReligious aspects. 001563155 650_0 $$aBrain$$xReligious aspects. 001563155 650_0 $$aSpirituality. 001563155 650_0 $$aPsychology, Religious. 001563155 650_0 $$aReligion and science. 001563155 650_0 $$aTheology. 001563155 650_0 $$aNeurosciences. 001563155 650_0 $$aElectronic books. 001563155 65012 $$aReligion and Science 001563155 65022 $$aTheology 001563155 65022 $$aNeurosciences 001563155 65022 $$aSpirituality 001563155 65022 $$aBrain$$xphysiology 001563155 650_6 $$aNeurophysiologie$$xAspect religieux. 001563155 650_6 $$aCerveau$$xAspect religieux. 001563155 650_6 $$aSpiritualité. 001563155 650_6 $$aPsychologie religieuse. 001563155 650_6 $$aReligion et sciences. 001563155 650_6 $$aThéologie. 001563155 650_6 $$aNeurosciences. 001563155 650_7 $$apsychology of religion.$$2aat 001563155 650_7 $$atheology.$$2aat 001563155 650_7 $$aPSYCHOLOGY$$xCognitive Neuroscience & Cognitive NEuropsychology.$$2bisacsh 001563155 650_7 $$aTheology$$2fast 001563155 650_7 $$aReligion and science$$2fast 001563155 650_7 $$aNeurosciences$$2fast 001563155 650_7 $$aBrain$$xReligious aspects$$2fast 001563155 650_7 $$aPsychology, Religious$$2fast 001563155 650_7 $$aSpirituality$$2fast 001563155 758__ $$ihas work:$$aNeurotheology (Text)$$1https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/entity/E39PCH94DBgVFHxMmPFyJB3Yj3$$4https://id.oclc.org/worldcat/ontology/hasWork 001563155 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aNewberg, Andrew B., 1966-$$tNeurotheology.$$dNew York : Columbia University Press, [2018]$$z9780231179041$$w(DLC) 2017044209 001563155 852__ $$bebk 001563155 85640 $$3eBooks on EBSCOhost$$uhttps://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=1725262$$91397706.2 001563155 85642 $$3De Gruyter, Cover$$uhttps://www.degruyter.com/doc/cover/9780231546775.jpg 001563155 980__ $$aBIB 001563155 980__ $$aEBOOK 001563155 982__ $$aEbook 001563155 983__ $$aOnline 001563155 994__ $$aC0$$bISE
