Note
"Published in 2006, Dr. Franita Ware's article "Warm Demander Pedagogy: Culturally Responsive Teaching that Supports a Culture of Achievement for African American Students" (Urban Education, 41(4), 427-456) continues to be referenced by scholars and practitioners across the field of education (Delpit, 2012; Hammond, 2015). This book will build on the findings outlined in that groundbreaking study, in conjunction with broadened research on how to support teachers who do not share the cultural or racial identities of their students, by providing guidance for educators to become Warm Demander teachers and administrators. The phrase "Warm Demander" was first coined by Judith Kleinfeld (1975) at the University of Alaska to describe the style of teachers most effective with Indigenous children from rural villages attending urban schools in Alaska. Other educators over the years have identified a similar teaching stance among effective teachers of African American and Latino students (Ladson-Billings, 2009; Antrop-González and De Jesús, 2006). Ware will advance thinking around the Warm Demander stance by walking educators through three important steps: 1) Becoming Healthy (Radical Self-Care), 2) Becoming Whole (Engaging in implicit bias work to see students as valuable collaborators in the education process), and 3) Becoming Liberators (to work to change the systems of oppression in schools that harm educators and students). For teachers who desire to channel their expanded views on our students to become Warm Demander Teachers, this book is a guide for growing the necessary skills"-- Provided by publisher.
