Summary
"In the shadow of the murder of George Floyd in late Spring of 2020, this book focuses on how a south Florida multi-racial church dealt with issues of race, racism, and social activism. While predominantly White churches have been scrutinized by social scientists, recent research has brought into question the racially liberalizing impact of such diverse churches. Findings demonstrated that members and leaders tended to perpetuate a racial ideology based in color-blind theological teachings that often-minimized problems facing Black folks and other marginalized groups. This ideology also allowed the church and those involved to oppose racial activism seeking social justice in the wake of the George Floyd murder. Furthermore, findings from this research also shed light on church practices and policies that reproduce racial inequality and ultimately shaped the initial response to the murder of George Floyd as well. In the end, the book argues that, despite being a diverse place of worship that is supposed to embrace diversity, multi-racial churches like this one face challenges that lead to the reproduction of the racial status quo"-- Provided by publisher.
