Graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1919 with a BA and earned a PhD from University of Chicago in 1924. Joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky in 1923 in the department of geology. Became a professor in 1926 and chair of the department from 1927 until his retirement in 1966. Was state geologist and director of the Bureau of Mineral and Topographic Survey 1932-1934, as well as director of the Geological Survey of Kentucky 1948-1958. Edited or wrote several books. Died April 9. 1985 in Lexington, Ky.)
