Indeed, by most measurable standards, conditions for many blacks have grown worse since 1965: desperate poverty, incarceration rates, teenage pregnancy and out-of- wedlock births, and educational failures. For years, pundits have blamed these problems on forces outside the black community. But now, in a broad-ranging re-envisioning of the post-Civil Rights black American experience, author McWhorter argues that black America's current problems began with an unintended byproduct of the Civil Rights revolution, a crippling mindset of "therapeutic alienation." This wary stance toward mainstream American culture, although it is a legacy of racism in the past, continues to hold blacks back, and McWhorter traces the poisonous effects of this defeatist attitude. McWhorter puts forth a new vision of black leadership, arguing that both blacks and whites must abolish the culture of victimhood.--From publisher description. 000302383 650_0 $$aAfrican Americans$$xSocial conditions$$y1975- 000302383 650_0 $$aAfrican Americans$$xPsychology. 000302383 650_0 $$aAlienation (Social psychology)$$zUnited States. 000302383 650_0 $$aInner cities$$zUnited States. 000302383 650_0 $$aAfrican Americans$$xEconomic conditions. 000302383 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xRace relations. 000302383 85200 $$bgen$$hE185.86$$i.M427$$i2006 000302383 85641 $$3Table of contents$$uhttp://www.loc.gov/catdir/toc/ecip0517/2005023472.html 000302383 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:302383$$pGLOBAL_SET 000302383 980__ $$aBIB 000302383 980__ $$aBOOK 000302383 994__ $$aC0$$bISE
