About 25,000 became prisoners of war, most of them confined in New York City under conditions so atrocious that they perished by the thousands. Evidence suggests that at least 17,500 Americans may have died in these prisons--more than twice the number to die on the battlefield. New York City was the principal base of the Crown's military operations. Beginning with the American captives taken during the 1776 invasion of New York, captured Americans were stuffed into a hastily assembled collection of public buildings, sugar houses, and prison ships. The prisoners were shockingly overcrowded and chronically underfed--those who escaped alive told of comrades so hungry they ate their own clothes and shoes. This book is the first-ever account of these hell-holes, a sobering commentary on how much we have forgotten about our struggle for independence. 000338909 61010 $$aGreat Britain.$$bArmy$$xPrisons$$xHistory$$y18th century. 000338909 650_0 $$aPrisoners of war$$zUnited States$$xHistory$$y18th century. 000338909 650_0 $$aPrisoners of war$$zGreat Britain$$xHistory$$y18th century. 000338909 650_0 $$aMilitary prisons$$zNew York (State)$$zNew York$$xHistory$$y18th century. 000338909 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xHistory$$yRevolution, 1775-1783$$xPrisoners and prisons, British. 000338909 651_0 $$aNew York (N.Y.)$$xHistory, Military$$y18th century. 000338909 85200 $$bgen$$hE281$$i.B87$$i2008 000338909 85641 $$3Table of contents only$$uhttp://www.loc.gov/catdir/toc/ecip0821/2008028093.html 000338909 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:338909$$pGLOBAL_SET 000338909 980__ $$aBIB 000338909 980__ $$aBOOK
