Summary
Don Diego Vega, from the sleepy colony of California, is a cadet at the royal military academy in Spain. His father, Don Alejandro, is alcalde of the Los Angeles region. Don Diego disdains California as boring and insufferably rustic; but returns obediently when called home. When he arrives, all is not as expected. His father no longer serves as alcalde; cruel, bumbling Don Luis Quintero has replaced him. The real power behind Quintero is Captain Esteban Pasquale, a sinister villain who commands the local Spanish garrison. While Diego's father and others fret and fume about the new alcalde, Diego plays the fop--effete, weak, and disinterested. He is so adept that no one will suspect him when he takes action against Quintero and Pasquale, as the mysterious, masked figure known as Zorro. Zorro challenges Quintero's corrupt rule and captures the hearts and imaginations of the peasant population, the old, loyal dons, and the heart of the mayor's niece, Lolita.
