Bringing together writings on political and social reform with literary works, Noorani challenges dominant assumptions about the emergence of modernity. It shows that while nationalist, liberal, and democratic ideals emerged in the Middle East under European influence, these ideals were nevertheless created out of existing cultural values by reformers and intellectuals. The central element of this process, the book argues, was the transformation of virtue into nationality. 000351682 650_0 $$aEgyptian literature, Modern$$xHistory and criticism. 000351682 650_0 $$aHegemony$$zEgypt$$xHistory. 000351682 650_0 $$aHegemony$$zMiddle East$$xHistory. 000351682 650_0 $$aIdeals (Philosophy)$$xSocial aspects$$zEgypt$$xHistory. 000351682 650_0 $$aNationalism$$zEgypt$$xHistory. 000351682 650_0 $$aPolitical culture$$zEgypt$$xHistory. 000351682 650_0 $$aPolitical culture$$zMiddle East$$xHistory. 000351682 651_0 $$aEgypt$$xPolitics and government$$y1882-1952. 000351682 651_0 $$aMiddle East$$xColonial influence. 000351682 651_0 $$aMiddle East$$xPolitics and government. 000351682 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 000351682 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aNoorani, Yaseen, 1966-$$tCulture and hegemony in the colonial Middle East.$$b1st ed.$$dNew York : Palgrave Macmillan, 2010$$z9780230623194$$w(DLC) 2009039958$$w(OCoLC)435419664 000351682 8520_ $$bacq 000351682 85280 $$bebk$$hProquest Ebook Central 000351682 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=623897$$zOnline Access 000351682 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:351682$$pGLOBAL_SET 000351682 980__ $$aEBOOK 000351682 980__ $$aBIB 000351682 982__ $$aEbook 000351682 983__ $$aOnline
