Chronicling these diasporas from the end of World War II to the present, Duany argues that each sending country's relationship to the United States shapes the transnational experience for each migrant group, from legal status and migratory patterns to work activities and the connections migrants retain with their home countries. Blending extensive ethnographic, archival, and survey research, Duany proposes that contemporary migration challenges the traditional concept of the nation-state. Increasing numbers of immigrants and their descendents lead what Duany calls "bifocal" lives, bridging two or more states, markets, languages, and cultures throughout their lives. Even as nations attempt to draw their boundaries more clearly, the ceaseless movement of transnational migrants, Duany argues, requires the rethinking of conventional equations between birthplace and residence, identity and citizenship, borders and boundaries. 000438469 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000438469 650_0 $$aWest Indians$$zUnited States. 000438469 650_0 $$aWest Indians$$zPuerto Rico. 000438469 650_0 $$aTransnationalism. 000438469 651_0 $$aCaribbean Area$$xEmigration and immigration. 000438469 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xEmigration and immigration. 000438469 651_0 $$aPuerto Rico$$xEmigration and immigration. 000438469 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aDuany, Jorge.$$tBlurred borders.$$dChapel Hill : University of North Carolina Press, 2011$$z9780807834978$$z9780807872031$$w(DLC) 2011002343$$w(OCoLC)697612962 000438469 8520_ $$bacq 000438469 85280 $$bebk$$hProQuest Ebook Central 000438469 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=3039490$$zOnline Access 000438469 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:438469$$pGLOBAL_SET 000438469 980__ $$aEBOOK 000438469 980__ $$aBIB 000438469 982__ $$aEbook 000438469 983__ $$aOnline
