Here, sociologist Amy L. Stone examines how the tactics of LGBT activists have evolved and unravels the complex relationship between ballot measure campaigns and the broader goals of the LGBT movement. The first comprehensive history of anti-gay ballot measures, this book draws on archival research and interviews with more than one hundred LGBT activists to provide a detailed account of the campaigns to stop such ballot measures from passing into law. Although LGBT activists lost the vast majority of these fights, they also won significant statewide victories as well as local successes. Stone analyzes how LGBT activists refined their campaign tactics in response to both victories and defeats. She also stresses that such campaigns have played both a complementary and contradictory role within the LGBT movement.--From publisher description. 000438914 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000438914 650_0 $$aGay liberation movement$$zUnited States. 000438914 650_0 $$aGay rights$$zUnited States. 000438914 650_0 $$aConstitutional amendments$$zUnited States. 000438914 650_0 $$aReferendum$$zUnited States. 000438914 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 000438914 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aStone, Amy L.$$tGay rights at the ballot box.$$dMinneapolis : University of Minnesota Press, 2012$$z9780816675470$$z9780816675487$$w(DLC) 2012000010$$w(OCoLC)759910073 000438914 8520_ $$bacq 000438914 85280 $$bebk$$hProquest Ebook Central 000438914 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=902559$$zOnline Access 000438914 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:438914$$pGLOBAL_SET 000438914 980__ $$aEBOOK 000438914 980__ $$aBIB 000438914 982__ $$aEbook 000438914 983__ $$aOnline
