This link takes a variety of forms in democratic regimes, from the organization of political machines built around clientelistic networks to the establishment of sophisticated programmatic parties. Latin American Party Systems provides a novel theoretical argument to account for differences in the degree to which political party systems in the region were programmatically structured at the end of the twentieth century. Based on a diverse array of indicators and surveys of party legislators and public opinion, the book argues that learning and adaptation through fundamental policy innovations are the main mechanisms by which politicians build programmatic parties. Marshalling extensive evidence, the book's analysis shows the limits of alternative explanations and substantiates a sanguine view of programmatic competition, nevertheless recognizing that this form of party system organization is far from ubiquitous and enduring in Latin America. 000438945 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000438945 650_0 $$aPolitical parties$$zLatin America. 000438945 651_0 $$aLatin America$$xPolitics and government$$y1980- 000438945 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 000438945 7001_ $$aKitschelt, Herbert. 000438945 77608 $$iPrint version:$$tLatin American party systems.$$dCambridge ; New York : $b Cambridge University Press, 2010$$z9780521114950$$z9780521132664$$w(DLC) 2009016392$$w(OCoLC)319248381 000438945 8520_ $$bacq 000438945 85280 $$bebk$$hProquest Ebook Central 000438945 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=534719$$zOnline Access 000438945 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:438945$$pGLOBAL_SET 000438945 980__ $$aEBOOK 000438945 980__ $$aBIB 000438945 982__ $$aEbook 000438945 983__ $$aOnline
