Hansen explores seven oases along the road, from Xi'an to Samarkand, where merchants, envoys, pilgrims, and travelers mixed in cosmopolitan communities, tolerant of religions from Buddhism to Zoroastrianism. There was no single, continuous road, but a chain of markets that traded between east and west. China's main partners were the peoples of modern-day Iran, whose tombs in China reveal much about their Zoroastrian beliefs. Silk was not the most important good on the road; paper had a bigger impact in Europe, while metals, spices, and glass were just as important as silk. Perhaps most significant of all was the road's transmission of ideas, technologies, and artistic motifs. --from publisher description 000449505 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000449505 650_0 $$aHistoric sites$$zSilk Road. 000449505 650_0 $$aTrade routes$$zAsia, Central$$xHistory. 000449505 650_0 $$aTrade routes$$zAsia$$xHistory. 000449505 651_0 $$aSilk Road$$xHistory. 000449505 651_0 $$aSilk Road$$xHistory$$vSources. 000449505 651_0 $$aSilk Road$$xDescription and travel. 000449505 651_0 $$aSilk Road$$xHistory, Local. 000449505 655_7 $$aElectronic books.$$2lcsh 000449505 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aHansen, Valerie, 1958-$$tSilk Road.$$dNew York : Oxford University Press, c2012$$z9780195159318$$w(DLC) 2011041804$$w(OCoLC)757838314 000449505 8520_ $$bacq 000449505 85280 $$bebk$$hEbrary 000449505 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=1015307$$zOnline Access 000449505 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:449505$$pGLOBAL_SET 000449505 980__ $$aEBOOK 000449505 980__ $$aBIB 000449505 982__ $$aEbook 000449505 983__ $$aOnline
