Lance R. Blyth's study of Chiricahua Apaches and the presidio of Janos in the U.S.-Mexican borderlands reveals how no single entity had a monopoly on coercion, and how violence became the primary means by which relations were established, maintained, or altered both within and between communities, to include the Spanish-Mexican settlement of Janos in Nueva Vizcaya, present-day Chihuahua, and the Chiricahua Apaches. For more than two centuries violence was at the center of the relationships by which Janos and Chiricahua formed their communities. Violence created families by turning boys into men through campaigns and raids, which ultimately led to marriage and also determined the provisioning and security of these families, with acts of revenge and retaliation governing their attempts to secure themselves even as trade and exchange continued sporadically. This revisionist work reveals how during the Spanish, Mexican, and American eras both conflict and accommodation constituted these two communities that previous historians have often treated as separate and antagonistic. By showing not only the negative aspects of violence but also its potentially positive outcomes, Chiricahua and Janos helps us to understand violence not only in the southwestern borderlands but in borderland regions generally around the world. 000452754 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000452754 650_0 $$aChiricahua Indians$$zMexico$$zJanos$$xHistory. 000452754 650_0 $$aChiricahua Indians$$zMexico$$zJanos$$xGovernment relations. 000452754 650_0 $$aChiricahua Indians$$xViolence against$$zMexico$$zJanos. 000452754 650_0 $$aViolence$$xSocial aspects$$zMexico$$zJanos. 000452754 651_0 $$aJanos (Mexico)$$xHistory. 000452754 651_0 $$aJanos (Mexico)$$xRace relations. 000452754 651_0 $$aJanos (Mexico)$$xPolitics and government. 000452754 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aBlyth, Lance R., 1966-$$rChiricahua and Janos.$$dLincoln : University of Nebraska Press, c2012$$z9780803237667$$w(DLC) 2011051695$$w(OCoLC)759915539 000452754 830_0 $$aBorderlands and transcultural studies. 000452754 8520_ $$bacq 000452754 85280 $$bebk$$hProQuest Ebook Central 000452754 85280 $$bebk$$hProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete 000452754 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=928347$$zOnline Access 000452754 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=928347$$zOnline Access 000452754 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:452754$$pGLOBAL_SET 000452754 980__ $$aEBOOK$$aEBOOK 000452754 980__ $$aBIB 000452754 982__ $$aEbook 000452754 983__ $$aOnline
