But Constantine is also notable for his ability to control a sprawling empire and effect major changes. The Justice of Constantine examines Constantine's judicial and administrative legislation and his efforts to maintain control over the imperial bureaucracy, to guarantee the working of Roman justice, and to keep the will of his subjects throughout the Roman Empire. John Dillon first analyzes the record of Constantine's legislation and its relationship to prior legislation. His initial chapters also serve as an introduction to Roman law and administration in later antiquity. Dillon then considers Constantine's public edicts and internal communications about access to law, trials and procedure, corruption, and punishment for administrative abuses. How imperial officials relied on correspondence with Constantine to resolve legal questions is also considered. A study of Constantine's expedited appellate system, to ensure provincial justice, concludes the book. Constantine's constitutions reveal much about the Theodosian Code and the laws included in it. Constantine consistently seeks direct sources of reliable information in order to enforce his will. In official correspondence, meanwhile, Constantine strives to maintain control over his officials through punishment; trusted agents; and the cultivation of accountability, rivalry, and suspicion among them. 000452977 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000452977 60000 $$aConstantine$$bI,$$cEmperor of Rome,$$d-337. 000452977 650_0 $$aRoman law$$vSources. 000452977 650_0 $$aRoman law$$xHistory. 000452977 650_0 $$aRoman law$$xHistory$$vSources. 000452977 650_0 $$aJustice, Administration of (Roman law)$$xHistory. 000452977 651_0 $$aRome$$xHistory$$yConstantine I, the Great, 306-337. 000452977 651_0 $$aRome$$xHistory$$yConstantine I, the Great, 306-337$$vSources. 000452977 77608 $$iPrint verson:$$aDillon, John Noel.$$tJustice of Constantine.$$dAnn Arbor : University of Michigan Press, c2012$$z9780472118298$$w(DLC) 2012005025$$w(OCoLC)768168506 000452977 8520_ $$bacq 000452977 85280 $$bebk$$hEbrary 000452977 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=3415082$$zOnline Access 000452977 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:452977$$pGLOBAL_SET 000452977 980__ $$aEBOOK 000452977 980__ $$aBIB 000452977 982__ $$aEbook 000452977 983__ $$aOnline
