This film follows him as he returns to Rio de Janeiro, specifically to Jardim Gramacho, or "Garbage Garden." The world's largest landfill, it receives 7,000 tons daily, an astonishing 70% of all Rio's garbage. "We are not pickers of garbage; we are pickers of recyclable materials," says Tião, a catadore, or trash picker who thinks of himself and his fellows as environmentalists. The pickers have a union, which has built a recycling center, medical clinic, day care and skills-training centers, and community lending library of discarded books for their members. Muniz photographs a number of the pickers, reworks the photographs with garbage, and auctions several in London. Believing in the transformative power of art, Muniz donates the proceeds to the pickers who posed, in recognition of their lives, in honor of the dignity of their work. 000455970 538__ $$aDVD; NTSC; 5.1 Dolby digital surround, 2.0 Dolby digital stereo. 000455970 546__ $$aSoundtrack in English and Portuguese, with English subtitles. 000455970 586__ $$aWinner 2010 São Paulo International Film Festival Itamaraty Award for Best Documentary; João Jardim, Lucy Walker, Karen Harley; 2010 Sundance Film Festival, Audience Award World Cinema-Documentary; Lucy Walker; 2010 Berlin International Film Festival, Amnesty International Film Prize; Lucy Walker, Karen Harley, João Jardim, and Panorama Audience Award; Lucy Walker, Karen Harley, João Jardim; Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, Audience Award, Best Documentary; IDA Awards, Best Documentary. 000455970 60010 $$aMuniz, Vik. 000455970 650_0 $$aTrash art. 000455970 650_0 $$aRagpickers$$zBrazil$$zRio de Janeiro. 000455970 650_0 $$aSanitary landfills$$zBrazil$$zRio de Janeiro. 000455970 650_0 $$aWaste disposal sites$$zBrazil$$zRio de Janeiro. 000455970 650_0 $$aPoor$$zBrazil$$zRio de Janeiro$$xSocial conditions. 000455970 650_0 $$aFound objects (Art) 000455970 650_0 $$aGroup work in art. 000455970 650_0 $$aArt, Modern$$y21st century$$vExhibitions. 000455970 650_0 $$aRefuse and refuse disposal in art$$vExhibitions. 000455970 651_0 $$aRio de Janeiro (Brazil) 000455970 655_7 $$aDocumentary films.$$2lcgft 000455970 7001_ $$aWalker, Lucy.$$4drt 000455970 7001_ $$aJardim, João.$$4drt 000455970 7001_ $$aHarley, Karen.$$4drt 000455970 7001_ $$aAynsley, Angus.$$4pro 000455970 7001_ $$aLevine, Hank,$$d1965-$$4pro 000455970 7000_ $$aMoby.$$4cmp 000455970 7001_ $$aMuniz, Vik.$$4ive 000455970 7102_ $$aAlmega Projects (Firm) 000455970 7102_ $$a02 Filmes (Firm) 000455970 7102_ $$aArthouse Films. 000455970 7102_ $$aNew Video Group. 000455970 74002 $$aWaste land, beyond Gramacho. 000455970 74002 $$aUntold story. 000455970 830_0 $$aArthouse films (Series) ;$$v019. 000455970 85200 $$bdvd$$hN6494.T73$$iW378$$i2011 000455970 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:455970$$pGLOBAL_SET 000455970 980__ $$aBIB 000455970 980__ $$aDVD
