We are an urban planet. If ongoing changes in climate are to have an impact on the human species, most of these impacts will play out in cities. This fact was brought into full relief in the summer of 2003, when more than 70,000 residents of Europe perished in one of the most prolonged and intense heat waves in human history. The final death toll would exceed that associated with any Western European or American conflict since World War II, or any other natural disaster to have ever struck a region of the developed world, and the vast majority of these deaths occurred in cities. Studies in the aftermath of the heat wave would show that not only had global warming increased the likelihood of such an extreme event, but that the intensity of the heat had been greatly enhanced by the physical design of the cities themselves, exposing residents of cities to a much greater risk of illness or death than others. This book is the first to explore the dramatic amplification of global warming underway in cities and the range of actions that can be taken to slow the pace of warming. A core thesis of the book is that the principal strategy advocated by the global science community to mitigate climate change - the reduction of greenhouse gases - will not prove sufficient to measurably slow the rapid pace of warming in cities"--$$cProvided by publisher. 000455992 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000455992 650_0 $$aClimatic changes$$xEconomic aspects. 000455992 650_0 $$aClimate change mitigation. 000455992 650_0 $$aUrbanization. 000455992 650_0 $$aCities and towns. 000455992 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aStone, Brian, Jr.$$tCity and the coming climate.$$dNew York : Cambridge University Press, 2012$$z9781107016712$$w(DLC) 2011044842$$w(OCoLC)759050076 000455992 8520_ $$bacq 000455992 85280 $$bebk$$hEBSCOhost 000455992 85640 $$3EBSCOhost$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=443713$$zOnline Access 000455992 85641 $$3Table of contents only$$uhttp://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy1201/2011044842-t.html 000455992 85642 $$3Contributor biographical information$$uhttp://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy1201/2011044842-b.html 000455992 85642 $$3Publisher description$$uhttp://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy1205/2011044842-d.html 000455992 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:455992$$pGLOBAL_SET 000455992 980__ $$aEBOOK 000455992 980__ $$aBIB 000455992 982__ $$aEbook 000455992 983__ $$aOnline 000455992 994__ $$a92$$bISE
