The federal government, the business community, and the higher education sector are united in their belief that study abroad is critical to such success. To that end, significant institutional resources are being invested in study abroad. This monograph seeks to address two fundamental questions. First, who studies abroad (or who does not) and why? Second, what are the outcomes of study abroad? Increasing and broadening study abroad participation have proven particularly challenging, and the authors look to the research for clues as to how such participation rates might be improved. Although the research literature suggests positive outcomes of study abroad, existing studies leave educators with some challenging questions. Based on their review, the authors pose recommendations for ways in which study abroad in the twenty-first century can renew its purposes and fulfill its promise. -- Back cover. 000456621 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000456621 650_0 $$aForeign study. 000456621 650_0 $$aInternational education. 000456621 650_0 $$aEducation and globalization. 000456621 650_0 $$aCollege students. 000456621 650_0 $$aAmerican students$$zForeign countries. 000456621 7001_ $$aTwombly, Susan B. 000456621 77608 $$iPrint version:$$tStudy abroad in a new global century.$$dHoboken, N.J. : Wiley Periodicals, Inc. ; San Francisco, Calif. : Jossey-Bass, c2012$$z9781118511374$$w(OCoLC)808413776 000456621 830_0 $$aASHE higher education report ;$$vv. 38, no. 4. 000456621 8520_ $$bacq 000456621 85280 $$bebk$$hProQuest Ebook Central 000456621 85280 $$bebk$$hProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete 000456621 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=1051824$$zOnline Access 000456621 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=1051824$$zOnline Access 000456621 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:456621$$pGLOBAL_SET 000456621 980__ $$aEBOOK$$aEBOOK 000456621 980__ $$aBIB 000456621 982__ $$aEbook 000456621 983__ $$aOnline
