This book is the first attempt by a historian to study the material as a whole. The analysis reveals significant regional variations that reflect different stages in the process of conversion to Christianity and the growth of royal power. Many monuments were declarations of faith or manifestations of status; but virtually all reflect inheritance claims, and cast unexpected light on the prehistory of the inheritance customs found in later Scandinavian law codes. The results of this analysis make a significant contribution to understanding developments in other parts of the Germanic world, as well as Scandinavia. 000466473 5208_ $$aThe inclusion of a digest of the data-base on which this book is based will facilitate further study of this rich vein of evidence."--BOOK JACKET. 000466473 650_0 $$aInscriptions, Runic. 000466473 650_0 $$aVikings$$vSources. 000466473 651_0 $$aScandinavia$$xSocial life and customs. 000466473 651_0 $$aScandinavia$$xHistory. 000466473 85200 $$bgen$$hPD2013$$i.S27$$i2000 000466473 85641 $$3Table of contents$$uhttp://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy0610/00037501-t.html 000466473 85642 $$3Publisher description$$uhttp://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/enhancements/fy0610/00037501-d.html 000466473 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:466473$$pGLOBAL_SET 000466473 980__ $$aBIB 000466473 980__ $$aBOOK
