Inspired by the civil rights movement, Cruz, a Mexican American with only an 8th grade education, became jailhouse lawyer-- writ writer in prison parlance-- and the catalyst of prison reform in Texas. Because he helped other prisoners with lawsuits, the Texas Department of Corrections classified Cruz as an agitator, transferred him to the Ellis Unit "the Alcatraz of Texas," and subjected him to long periods in solitary confinement. Cruz filed a case against George Beto, director of the TDC, which Cruz won in the Supreme Court. This led directly to the 1974 class action suit that found the TDC system unconstitutional. As told by wardens, convicts, and former prisoners who knew him, the film weaves contemporary and archival film footage to evoke the fascinating transformation of Fred Cruz from prisoner to activist, and a prison system still haunted by its past. 000467040 5218_ $$aMPAA rating: Not rated. 000467040 538__ $$aDVD ; NTSC, region 1. 000467040 546__ $$aClosed-captioned. 000467040 586__ $$aOfficial selection: SXSW Film Festival, 2008 ; San Diego Latino, Film Festival, 2008. 000467040 60010 $$aCruz, Fred Arispe,$$d-1987. 000467040 61010 $$aTexas.$$bDepartment of Corrections. 000467040 650_0 $$aPrisoners$$zTexas. 000467040 650_0 $$aPrisoners$$xAbuse of$$zTexas. 000467040 650_0 $$aPrisoners$$xCivil rights$$zTexas. 000467040 650_0 $$aPrisoners$$xLegal status, laws, etc.$$zTexas. 000467040 650_0 $$aPrisons$$zTexas$$xHistory. 000467040 650_0 $$aHispanic American prisoners$$zTexas. 000467040 650_0 $$aCriminal justice, Administration of$$zTexas$$xHistory$$y20th century. 000467040 650_0 $$aPrisoners$$zUnited States$$xHistory. 000467040 650_0 $$aPrisons$$zUnited States$$xHistory. 000467040 650_0 $$aImprisonment$$zUnited States$$xHistory. 000467040 655_7 $$aDocumentary films.$$2lcgft 000467040 7001_ $$aMason, Susanne.$$4pro$$4drt 000467040 7001_ $$aGilb, Dagoberto,$$d1950-$$4adp 000467040 7001_ $$aBorrego, Jesse,$$d1962-$$4act 000467040 7001_ $$aLewis, Deborah Eve.$$4cng 000467040 7001_ $$aRhodes, Gabe.$$4cmp 000467040 7001_ $$aGuzman, Joel.$$4cmp 000467040 7001_ $$aTurner, William Bennett. 000467040 7102_ $$aPassage Productions. 000467040 7102_ $$aIndependent Television Service. 000467040 7102_ $$aLatino Public Broadcasting (Firm) 000467040 7102_ $$aNew Day Films. 000467040 7102_ $$aPublic Broadcasting Service (U.S.) 000467040 7300_ $$aIndependent lens (Television program) 000467040 85200 $$bdvd$$hHV8658.C7$$iW75$$i2008 000467040 85642 $$zInformation about the film from the official Writ Writer website:$$uhttp://www.writwritermovie.com/ 000467040 85642 $$zInformation about the film plus educational materials from PBS's Independent Lens website:$$uhttp://www.pbs.org/independentlens/writwriter/film.html 000467040 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:467040$$pGLOBAL_SET 000467040 980__ $$aBIB 000467040 980__ $$aDVD
