There, they lived as public Jews, under the spiritual guidance of a rabbi sent to them by the newly established Portuguese Jewish community in Amsterdam. In Senegal, the Jews were protected from agents of the Inquisition by local Muslim rulers. The Petite Côte communities included several Jews of mixed Portuguese-African heritage as well as African wives, offspring, and servants. The blade weapons trade was an important part of their commercial activities. These merchants participated marginally in the slave trade but fully in the arms trade, illegally supplying West African markets with swords. This blade weapons trade depended on artisans and merchants based in Morocco, Lisbon, and northern Europe and affected warfare in the Sahel and along the Upper Guinea Coast. After members of these communities moved to the United Provinces around 1620, they had a profound influence on relations between black and white Jews in Amsterdam. The study not only discovers previously unknown Jewish communities but by doing so offers a reinterpretation of the dynamics and processes of identity construction throughout the Atlantic world"--$$cProvided by publisher. 000470961 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000470961 650_0 $$aJews$$zSenegal$$zPetite Coast$$xHistory$$y16th century. 000470961 650_0 $$aJews$$zSenegal$$zPetite Coast$$xHistory$$y17th century. 000470961 650_0 $$aSephardim$$zSenegal$$zPetite Coast$$xHistory$$y16th century. 000470961 650_0 $$aSephardim$$zSenegal$$zPetite Coast$$xHistory$$y17th century. 000470961 650_0 $$aMarranos$$zSenegal$$zPetite Coast$$xHistory$$y16th century. 000470961 650_0 $$aMarranos$$zSenegal$$zPetite Coast$$xHistory$$y17th century. 000470961 651_0 $$aPetite Coast (Senegal)$$xEthnic relations. 000470961 655_0 $$aElectronic books. 000470961 7001_ $$aHorta, José da Silva. 000470961 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aMark, Peter (Peter Allen), 1948-$$tForgotten Diaspora.$$dCambridge ; New York : Cambridge University Press, 2011, ©2011$$z9780521192866$$w(DLC) 2010044677$$w(OCoLC)671573426 000470961 852__ $$bacq 000470961 85280 $$bebk$$hEBSCOhost 000470961 85640 $$3EBSCOhost$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=352547$$zOnline Access 000470961 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:470961$$pGLOBAL_SET 000470961 980__ $$aEBOOK 000470961 980__ $$aBIB 000470961 982__ $$aEbook 000470961 983__ $$aOnline 000470961 994__ $$a92$$bISE
