Note
A treatise on military science. Events of the American Revolution are used in several cases as illustrative material. "The work has remained infamous from the following foot-note on page 190, under the subject of bows: 'Dip arrows in matter of small pox, and twang them at the American rebels, in order to inoculate them; this would sooner disband these stubborn, ignorant, enthusiastic savages, than any other compulsive measures. Such is their dread and fear of that disorder!' In all but two known copies this note is mortised out."--Evans.
Published to assist in providing funds "to relieve and support the innocent children and widows of the valiant soldiers inhumanly and wantonly butchered" when "peaceably marching to and from Concord the 19th April, 1775." Cf. Preface.
Dedicated "to the Right Honorable Hugh, Earl Percy." - Engraved frontispiece signed: J. Smither sculp.
"Subscribers names."--p. [1-19] of unnumbered section. Almost all subscribers were of the British army and navy.
"Errata."--p. [22], unnumbered section.
Reproduction of original from British Library.
