Note
The first seven letters are spurious, and have been attributed to both John Vardill ("Poplicola") and John Randolph. They are reprinted from "Letters from General Washington, to several of his friends in the year 1776," London, 1777. In many copies of the 1796 edition a sheet was inserted containing a letter from Washington, dated March 3, 1797, denying the authenticity of these first seven letters. Cf. Ford, W.C. The spurious letters attributed to Washington, Brooklyn, 1889.
