Not only was it urgent and critical for the survival of state and society, it mobilized huge numbers of men and women every year from across the whole face of the Mediterranean. In Bringing in the Sheaves, Brent D. Shaw investigates the ways in which human labour interacted with the instruments of harvesting, what part the workers and their tools had in the whole economy, and how the work itself was organized. Both collective and individual aspects of the story are investigated, centred on the life-story of a single reaper whose work in the wheat fields of North Africa is documented in his funerary epitaph. The narrative then proceeds to an analysis of the ways in which this cyclical human behaviour formed and influenced modes of thinking about matters beyond the harvest. The work features an edition of the reaper inscription, and a commentary on it. It is also lavishly illustrated to demonstrate the important iconic and pictorial dimensions of the story."--pub. desc. 000694109 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000694109 650_0 $$aWheat$$xHarvesting$$zRome$$xHistory. 000694109 650_0 $$aWheat$$xHarvesting$$xSocial aspects$$zRome$$xHistory. 000694109 650_0 $$aWheat$$xHarvesting$$xEconomic aspects$$zRome$$xHistory. 000694109 650_0 $$aLabor$$zRome$$xHistory. 000694109 650_0 $$aRomans$$xAgriculture$$zAfrica, North$$vBiography. 000694109 651_0 $$aAfrica, North$$xHistory$$yTo 647. 000694109 651_0 $$aRome$$xSocial life and customs. 000694109 651_0 $$aRome$$xEconomic conditions. 000694109 77608 $$iPrint version$$aShaw, Brent D.$$tBringing in the sheaves.$$dToronto ; Buffalo : University of Toronto Press, c2013$$z9781442644793$$w(DLC) 2013371011$$w(OCoLC)810526200 000694109 830_0 $$aRobson classical lectures. 000694109 8520_ $$bacq 000694109 85280 $$bebk$$hProQuest Ebook Central 000694109 85280 $$bebk$$hProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete 000694109 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=3285941$$zOnline Access 000694109 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=4670073$$zOnline Access 000694109 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:694109$$pGLOBAL_SET 000694109 980__ $$aEBOOK$$aEBOOK 000694109 980__ $$aBIB 000694109 982__ $$aEbook 000694109 983__ $$aOnline
