The ideas embedded in the mascot representations, however, are as old as the ideas constructed about the Indian since contact between the peoples of Western and the Eastern hemispheres. Such ideas conceived about Native Americans go hand-in-hand with the machinations of colonialism and conquest of these people. This research looks at how such ideas inform the construction of identity of white males from historic experiences with Native Americans. Notions of "playing Indian" and of "going Native" are precipitated from these historic contexts such that in the contemporary sense of considering Native Americans, popular culture ideas dress Native Americans in feathers and buckskin in order to satisfy stereotypic expectations of Indian-ness." -- Publisher's description. 000694115 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000694115 650_0 $$aIndians as mascots. 000694115 650_0 $$aSports team mascots$$xSocial aspects$$zUnited States. 000694115 650_0 $$aStereotypes (Social psychology) in sports$$zUnited States. 000694115 650_0 $$aIndians in popular culture. 000694115 650_0 $$aMasculinity. 000694115 650_0 $$aRacism$$zUnited States. 000694115 650_0 $$aIndians of North America$$xSocial conditions. 000694115 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aTaylor, Michael, 1962-$$tContesting constructed Indianness.$$dLanham, Maryland : Lexington Books, [2013]$$z9780739178645$$w(DLC) 2013006202$$w(OCoLC)849100888 000694115 8520_ $$bacq 000694115 85280 $$bebk$$hProQuest Ebook Central 000694115 85280 $$bebk$$hProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete 000694115 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=1222030$$zOnline Access 000694115 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/usiricelib-ebooks/detail.action?docID=1222030$$zOnline Access 000694115 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:694115$$pGLOBAL_SET 000694115 980__ $$aEBOOK$$aEBOOK 000694115 980__ $$aBIB 000694115 982__ $$aEbook 000694115 983__ $$aOnline
