Manchuria, as Western historiography commonly designates the three northeastern provinces of China, was a politically, culturally and economically contested region. In the late nineteenth century, the region became the centre of competing Russian, Chinese and Japanese interests, thereby also attracting global attention. The coexistence of people with different nationalities, ethnicities and cultures in Manchuria was rarely if ever harmoniously balanced or static. On the contrary, interactions were both dynamic and complex. Semi-colonial experiences affected the people's living conditions, status and power relations. The transcultural negotiations between all population groups across borders of all kinds are the subject of this book. The chapters of this volume shed light on various entangled histories in areas such as administration, the economy, ideas, ideologies, culture, media and daily life. 000695958 588__ $$aDescription based on online resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed November 4, 2013). 000695958 650_0 $$aCross-cultural studies$$zChina$$zManchuria. 000695958 7001_ $$aBen-Canaan, Dan,$$eeditor of compilation. 000695958 7001_ $$aGrüner, Frank,$$d1968-,$$eeditor of compilation. 000695958 7001_ $$aProdöhl, Ines,$$eeditor of compilation. 000695958 7112_ $$aInternational Conference "Global Challenge and Regional Response: Early Twentieth Century Northeast China"$$d(2009 :$$cHarbin, China) 000695958 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z3319020471$$z9783319020471$$w(OCoLC)863197199 000695958 830_0 $$aTranscultural research-- Heidelberg studies on Asia and Europe in a global context. 000695958 85280 $$bebk$$hSpringerLink 000695958 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-02048-8$$zOnline Access 000695958 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:695958$$pGLOBAL_SET 000695958 980__ $$aEBOOK 000695958 980__ $$aBIB 000695958 982__ $$aEbook 000695958 983__ $$aOnline 000695958 994__ $$a92$$bISE
