The most prominent effect of global climate change in the region is the melting sea ice in the Arctic Ocean, which enables a multitude of ocean uses to be initiated and extended, such as shipping, fishing and oil and gas extraction. Unlike in the Antarctic, there is currently no single comprehensive legal regime for governance of the Arctic. Instead, the region is regulated by a patchwork of international treaties, above all the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), various regional and sub-regional agreements, national laws and soft-law agreements. This treatise provides an evaluation of the governance regime that regulates the use of the Arctic marine environment and its readiness to protect these fragile ecosystems in light of the consequences of climate change. 000704603 588__ $$aDescription based on PDF title page (viewed April 15, 2014). 000704603 61120 $$aUnited Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea. 000704603 650_0 $$aLaw of the sea$$zArctic regions. 000704603 650_0 $$aFishery law and legislation. 000704603 650_0 $$aEconomic zones (Law of the sea)$$zArctic regions. 000704603 650_0 $$aGlobal warming$$zArctic regions. 000704603 650_0 $$aInternational law. 000704603 651_0 $$aArctic regions$$xInternational unification. 000704603 830_0 $$aHamburg studies on maritime affairs ;$$vv.27. 000704603 85280 $$bebk$$hSpringerLink 000704603 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-04471-2$$zOnline Access 000704603 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:704603$$pGLOBAL_SET 000704603 980__ $$aEBOOK 000704603 980__ $$aBIB 000704603 982__ $$aEbook 000704603 983__ $$aOnline 000704603 994__ $$a92$$bISE
