Since Ward Connerly kickstarted a state-by-state political mobilization against affirmative action in the mid-1990s, the percentage of public four-year colleges that consider racial or ethnic status in admissions has fallen from 60 percent to 35 percent. Only 45 percent of private colleges still explicitly consider race, with elite schools more likely to do so, although they, too, have retreated. Law professor and civil rights activist Sheryll Cashin argues that affirmative action as currently practiced does little to help disadvantaged people. Sixty years since the historic decision, we're undoubtedly far from meeting the promise of Brown v. Board of Education, but Cashin offers a new framework for true inclusion for the millions of children who live separate and unequal lives. Setting aside race in use of place in diversity programming, she writes, will better amend the structural disadvantages endured by many children of color, while enhancing the possibility that we might one day move past the racial resentment that affirmative action engenders"--$$cProvided by publisher. 000716591 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000716591 650_0 $$aAffirmative action programs in education$$zUnited States. 000716591 650_0 $$aDiscrimination in education$$xLaw and legislation$$zUnited States. 000716591 650_0 $$aUniversities and colleges$$zUnited States$$xAdmission. 000716591 650_0 $$aMinorities$$xEducation (Higher)$$zUnited States. 000716591 650_0 $$aEducational equalization$$zUnited States. 000716591 650_0 $$aMulticultural education$$zUnited States. 000716591 650_0 $$aCultural pluralism$$zUnited States. 000716591 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aCashin, Sheryll.$$tPlace, not race.$$dBoston, Massachusetts : Beacon Press, [2014]$$z9780807086148$$z0807086142$$w(DLC) 2013048249 000716591 852__ $$bacq 000716591 85280 $$bebk$$hEBSCOhost 000716591 85640 $$3EBSCOhost$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=751589$$zOnline Access 000716591 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:716591$$pGLOBAL_SET 000716591 980__ $$aEBOOK 000716591 980__ $$aBIB 000716591 982__ $$aEbook 000716591 983__ $$aOnline
