Summary
As Anna sits by her mother's deathbed she begins to study old diaries, letters, and photographs in an attempt to understand why her past was kept hidden from her. The story of three generations of Swedish women, chronicling advances in women's rights. It begins with Hanna, forced into motherhood at 12 by rape, and ends with Anna, the narrator, who terminates her first pregnancy by an abortion.
