At far higher rates than the general population, those in or entering U.S. jails and prisons are prone to many health problems. This is a problem not just for them, but also for the communities from which they come and to which, in nearly all cases, they will return. Health and Incarceration is the summary of a workshop jointly sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences(NAS) Committee on Law and Justice and the Institute of Medicine(IOM) Board on Health and Select Populations in December 2012. Academics, practitioners, state officials, and nongovernmental organization representatives from the fields of healthcare, prisoner advocacy, and corrections reviewed what is known about these health issues and what appear to be the best opportunities to improve healthcare for those who are now or will be incarcerated. The workshop was designed as a roundtable with brief presentations from 16 experts and time for group discussion. Health and Incarceration reviews what is known about the health of incarcerated individuals, the healthcare they receive, and effects of incarceration on public health. This report identifies opportunities to improve healthcare for these populations and provides a platform for visions of how the world of incarceration health can be a better place."-- Publisher's description. 000720850 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000720850 650_0 $$aPrisoners$$xHealth and hygiene$$zUnited States$$vCongresses. 000720850 650_0 $$aPrisoners$$xMedical care$$zUnited States$$vCongresses. 000720850 7001_ $$aSmith, Amy,$$d1960-$$erapporteur. 000720850 7102_ $$aInstitute of Medicine (U.S.).$$bBoard on the Health of Select Populations,$$eissuing body. 000720850 7102_ $$aNational Research Council (U.S.).$$bCommittee on Law and Justice,$$eissuing body. 000720850 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aNational Research Council (U.S.).$$tHealth and incarceration : a workshop summary.$$dWashington, District of Columbia : National Academies Press, [2013]$$z9780309287685$$w(OCoLC)859196932 000720850 852__ $$bebk 000720850 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://site.ebrary.com/lib/usiricelib/Doc?id=10863729$$zOnline Access 000720850 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:720850$$pGLOBAL_SET 000720850 980__ $$aEBOOK 000720850 980__ $$aBIB 000720850 982__ $$aEbook 000720850 983__ $$aOnline
