This review of past research on paleoenvironmental change since the Late Pleistocene presents paleoecological records of changing forest composition and fire over the last 14,000 years. This volume, and its conclusions, draws extensively from Dr. Daniel Gavin and Dr. Linda Brubaker?s study of five Olympic Peninsula pollen records. The Olympic Peninsula is an ideal setting for studying the responses of ecosystems to past climate change. Located just south of the maximum ice-sheet extent during the Last Glacial Maximum, there is abundant evidence that it functioned as a glacial refugium; 29 taxa endemic to the peninsula likely persisted in such refugia. Furthermore, its uniquely steep rainfall gradient produces a wide range of habitats over short distances. A literature review, synthesis of published data, and close examination of the authors? investigations of post-glacial climate and vegetation change, this book features detailed color maps and data graphics. 000724570 588__ $$aDescription based on online resource; title from PDF title page (viewed January 8, 2015). 000724570 650_0 $$aPaleoecology$$zWashington (State)$$zOlympic Peninsula. 000724570 650_0 $$aClimatic changes$$zWashington (State)$$zOlympic Peninsula. 000724570 650_0 $$aPaleoecology$$yPleistocene. 000724570 650_0 $$aPaleoecology$$yHolocene. 000724570 650_0 $$aPaleobiogeography$$zWashington (State)$$zOlympic Peninsula. 000724570 650_0 $$aEcology$$zWashington (State)$$zOlympic Peninsula. 000724570 7001_ $$aBrubaker, Linda B.,$$eauthor. 000724570 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783319110134 000724570 830_0 $$aEcological studies ;$$vv. 222. 000724570 852__ $$bebk 000724570 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-11014-1$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000724570 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:724570$$pGLOBAL_SET 000724570 980__ $$aEBOOK 000724570 980__ $$aBIB 000724570 982__ $$aEbook 000724570 983__ $$aOnline 000724570 994__ $$a92$$bISE
