Common ways to modify implant surfaces are described, and methods for the evaluation of surface properties are presented in an easy-to-read style. Experimental results that have contributed to surface modifications relevant for commercial available implants are presented, with emphasis on in vivo and clinical studies. While the focus is primarily on surface modifications at the micrometer and nanometer levels, alterations at the millimeter level are also covered, including thread designs and their possible influence on stress distribution. In addition, it is analyzed how surface alterations have changed the clinical long-term results for certain groups of patients. Care is taken to ensure that assessments are well balanced and draw attention to the potential disadvantages of different surfaces; for example, surfaces that may be more prone to biofilm accumulation are identified, with discussion of the clinical evidence. 000725084 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed January 26, 2015). 000725084 650_0 $$aDental implants. 000725084 650_0 $$aDental implants$$xComplications. 000725084 7001_ $$aWennerberg, Ann,$$eeditor. 000725084 7001_ $$aAlbrektsson, Tomas,$$eeditor. 000725084 7001_ $$aJimbo, Ryo,$$eeditor. 000725084 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783662453780 000725084 852__ $$bebk 000725084 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-662-45379-7$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000725084 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:725084$$pGLOBAL_SET 000725084 980__ $$aEBOOK 000725084 980__ $$aBIB 000725084 982__ $$aEbook 000725084 983__ $$aOnline 000725084 994__ $$a92$$bISE
