It has evolved from courses offered on partial differential equations (PDEs) over the last several years at the Politecnico di Milano. These courses had a twofold purpose: on the one hand, to teach students to appreciate the interplay between theory and modeling in problems arising in the applied sciences, and on the other to provide them with a solid theoretical background in numerical methods, such as finite elements. Accordingly, this textbook is divided into two parts. The first part, chapters 2 to 5, is more elementary in nature and focuses on developing and studying basic problems from the macro-areas of diffusion, propagation and transport, waves and vibrations. In turn the second part, chapters 6 to 11, concentrates on the development of Hilbert spaces methods for the variational formulation and the analysis of (mainly) linear boundary and initial-boundary value problems. 000726846 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (SpringerLink, viewed April 29, 2015). 000726846 650_0 $$aMathematics. 000726846 650_0 $$aDifferential equations, Partial. 000726846 650_0 $$aDifferential equations, Partial$$xNumerical solutions. 000726846 650_0 $$aDifferential equations, Elliptic. 000726846 650_0 $$aBoundary value problems. 000726846 650_0 $$aGeometry, Differential. 000726846 650_0 $$aFunctions. 000726846 650_0 $$aDiffusion. 000726846 77608 $$iPrint version:$$z9783319150925 000726846 830_0 $$aUnitext ;$$vvolume 86. 000726846 852__ $$bebk 000726846 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-15093-2$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000726846 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:726846$$pGLOBAL_SET 000726846 980__ $$aEBOOK 000726846 980__ $$aBIB 000726846 982__ $$aEbook 000726846 983__ $$aOnline 000726846 994__ $$a92$$bISE
