A mere handful are first-person accounts by slaves who ran away and freed themselves. Now two newly uncovered narratives join that exclusive group. Handed down through family and friends, they tell gripping stories of escape: Through a combination of intelligence, daring, and sheer luck, the men reached the protection of occupying Union troops. Historian Blight prefaces the narratives with each man's life history. Using genealogical information, Blight has reconstructed their childhoods as sons of white slaveholders, their service as cooks and camp hands during the Civil War, and their climb to black working-class stability in the North, where they reunited their families. In the stories of Wallace Turnage and John Washington, we find portals that offer a rich new answer to the question of how four million people moved from slavery to freedom.--From publisher description. 000732425 60010 $$aWashington, John,$$d1838-1918. 000732425 60010 $$aTurnage, Wallace,$$d1846-1916. 000732425 650_0 $$aFugitive slaves$$zUnited States$$vBiography. 000732425 650_0 $$aSlaves$$zVirginia$$zFredericksburg$$vBiography. 000732425 650_0 $$aSlaves$$zNorth Carolina$$zGreene County$$vBiography. 000732425 650_0 $$aAfrican Americans$$vBiography. 000732425 650_0 $$aWorking class$$zUnited States$$vBiography. 000732425 650_0 $$aSlave narratives$$zUnited States. 000732425 651_0 $$aUnited States$$xHistory$$yCivil War, 1861-1865$$xAfrican Americans. 000732425 85200 $$bgen$$hE450.W325$$iB58$$i2007 000732425 85641 $$3Table of contents$$uhttp://catdir.loc.gov/catdir/toc/ecip0715/2007014467.html 000732425 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:732425$$pGLOBAL_SET 000732425 980__ $$aBIB 000732425 980__ $$aBOOK
