Summary
To Sammy Kendall, the most interesting object in his home in Evanston, Illinois IL, is the enormous head of a moose mounted on the balcony that crosses one side on the big living room. The moose, who is known as 'Winky,' has only one eye. Ever since he can remember, Sammy has taken advantage of this fact to tiptoe out to the balcony after bedtime in order to do some harmless spying on his parents by peering through a hole in the back of Winky's head, and straight through the hollow eye. Now that he is eleven, Sammy seldom plays this childish game, but one night his curiosity is aroused when a stranger comes to the house and identifies himself as an F.B.I. man. Sammy, crouching behind Winky, hears the agent explain that a secret document had been stolen from "PROJECT BLAST," the government project located on the campus of Northwestern University. Sammy's father, who directs the project, is not under suspicion, but several of his co-workers are, and the agent takes Professor Kendall into his confidence. Unwittingly, of course, he has taken Sammy into his confidence too, and with a shock Sammy realizes that his childish spying has involved him in a very real "spy" game-espionage against PROJECT BLAST and the United States government.
