Born of humble origins, he went from collecting and selling empty bottles to building a business empire through the nineteenth-century China trade. Hailed as one of India's greatest philanthropists of the colonial era, Jejeebhoy utilized his wealth for copious charity for the people of Bombay and western India. But he was also an ambitious and canny actor within the colonial framework, whose ambitions went beyond altruistic desires to benefit society. Jejeebhoy belonged to the collaborationist class that emerged under early colonialism. This class--which also included prominent figures like Dwarkanath Tagore, the merchant-prince from Bengal--served as an important medium between the imperial and Indian cultures. However, the limits of collaboration for Indians were evident--Jejeebhoy faced many bureaucratic and cultural obstacles in his encounters with the imperial order. His efforts to promote himself and indigenous capabilities bear testimony to Indian ingenuity under the colonial regime."--Dust jacket. 000756853 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000756853 60000 $$aJamsetjee Jejeebhoy,$$d1783-1859. 000756853 650_0 $$aBusinesspeople$$zIndia$$vBiography. 000756853 650_0 $$aIndustrialists$$zIndia$$vBiography. 000756853 650_0 $$aPhilanthropists$$zIndia$$vBiography. 000756853 650_0 $$aParsees$$vBiography. 000756853 651_0 $$aIndia$$xHistory$$yBritish occupation, 1765-1947$$vBiography. 000756853 655_7 $$aBiographies.$$2lcgft 000756853 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aPalsetia, Jesse S.$$tJamsetjee Jejeebhoy of Bombay.$$dNew Delhi : Oxford University Press, 2016$$z9780199459216$$w(DLC) 2015364944$$w(OCoLC)913853293 000756853 85280 $$bebk$$hOxford Scholarship Online 000756853 85640 $$3Oxford scholarship online$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199459216.001.0001$$zOnline Access 000756853 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:756853$$pGLOBAL_SET 000756853 980__ $$aEBOOK 000756853 980__ $$aBIB 000756853 982__ $$aEbook 000756853 983__ $$aOnline
