Rising from humble origins, he became preacher at the regicide of Charles I, chaplain to Oliver Cromwell in the invasions of Ireland and Scotland, vice chancellor of the University of Oxford, and the premier religious statesman of the Interregnum. The restoration of the monarchy pushed Owen into dissent, criminalizing his religious practice and driving his writing of eight million words in defense of high Calvinism and religious toleration. But Owen transcended his many experiences of defeat, and his claims to quietism were frequently undermined by rumors of his involvement in anti-government conspiracies. This religious biography traces the evolution of Owen's thinking and religious practice until his emergence as a leader of Restoration nonconformists. 000757201 588__ $$aDescription based on online resource; title from home page (viewed on March 4, 2016). 000757201 60010 $$aOwen, John,$$d1616-1683. 000757201 60010 $$aOwen, John,$$d1616-1683$$xInfluence. 000757201 650_0 $$aDissenters, Religious$$zEngland$$vBiography. 000757201 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aGribben, Crawford.$$tJohn Owen and English Puritanism.$$dNew York : Oxford University Press, 2016$$z9780199798155$$w(DLC) 2015030026 000757201 830_0 $$aOxford studies in historical theology. 000757201 85280 $$bebk$$hOxford Scholarship Online 000757201 85640 $$3Oxford scholarship online$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199798155.001.0001$$zOnline Access 000757201 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:757201$$pGLOBAL_SET 000757201 980__ $$aEBOOK 000757201 980__ $$aBIB 000757201 982__ $$aEbook 000757201 983__ $$aOnline
