Illustrated by case studies of the language learning experiences of five Asian immigrant students in an English-medium school in Singapore, the author examines how the immigrant students negotiated a standard English ideology and their discursive positioning over the course of the school year. Specifically, the study traces how the prevailing standard English ideology interacted in highly complex ways with their being positioned as high academic achievers to ultimately influence their learning of English. This potent combination of language ideologies and circulating ideologies created a designer student immigration complex. By framing this situation as a complex, the study problematizes the power of ideologies in shaping the trajectories and identities of language learners. 000760853 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000760853 650_0 $$aEnglish language$$xStudy and teaching$$zSingapore$$xForeign speakers. 000760853 650_0 $$aImmigrant students$$zSingapore. 000760853 650_0 $$aMultilingual education$$zSingapore. 000760853 650_0 $$aIdeology. 000760853 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aDe Costa, Peter I.$$tPower of identity and ideology in language learning : designer immigrants learning english in Singapore.$$d[Cham], Switzerland : Springer, c2016$$z9783319302096$$w(OCoLC)936011738 000760853 830_0 $$aMultilingual education ;$$vv. 18. 000760853 852__ $$bebk 000760853 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-30211-9$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000760853 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:760853$$pGLOBAL_SET 000760853 980__ $$aEBOOK 000760853 980__ $$aBIB 000760853 982__ $$aEbook 000760853 983__ $$aOnline 000760853 994__ $$a92$$bISE
