Summary
Provides a brief introduction to the evolution of British housing over the last three hundred years. Shows how housing styles and construction have changed since 1700 and explores some of the forces which brought about those changes. Examines the timber frame, 16th-century stone buildings, Queen Anne housing, Baroque housing, the Georgian terrace, Regency housing, working class housing, the villa of the suburbs, early council housing, garden city estates, speculative developments between the world wars, 1940s prefabs, post-war system building, high rises, the estates of the 1970s and 1980s, and the migration back into the city.
