The key to understanding this unusual system, Reilly argues, is the prevalence of malaria within Arabian Peninsula oases and drainage basins, which rendered agricultural lands in Arabia extremely unhealthy for people without genetic or acquired resistance to malarial fevers. In this way, Arabian slave agriculture had unexpected similarities to slavery as practiced in the Caribbean and Brazil. This book synthesizes for the first time a body of historical and ethnographic data about slave-based agriculture in the Arabian Peninsula. Reilly uses an innovative methodology to analyze the limited historical record and a multidisciplinary approach to complicate our understandings of the nature of work in an area that is popularly thought of solely as desert. This work makes significant contributions both to the global literature on slavery and to the environmental history of the Middle East--an area that has thus far received little attention from scholars"--$$cProvided by publisher. 000768035 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000768035 650_0 $$aSlavery$$zArabian Peninsula$$xHistory. 000768035 650_0 $$aAfricans$$zArabian Peninsula$$xHistory. 000768035 650_0 $$aSlaves$$zArabian Peninsula$$xHistory. 000768035 650_0 $$aAgricultural laborers$$zArabian Peninsula$$xHistory. 000768035 650_0 $$aMalaria$$xSocial aspects$$zArabian Peninsula$$xHistory. 000768035 650_0 $$aAgriculture$$xHealth aspects$$zArabian Peninsula$$xHistory. 000768035 650_0 $$aAgriculture$$xSocial aspects$$zArabian Peninsula$$xHistory. 000768035 650_0 $$aAgriculture$$xEnvironmental aspects$$zArabian Peninsula$$xHistory. 000768035 650_0 $$aOases$$zArabian Peninsula$$xHistory. 000768035 651_0 $$aArabian Peninsula$$xEnvironmental conditions$$xHistory. 000768035 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aReilly, Benjamin.$$tSlavery, agriculture, and malaria in the Arabian Peninsula.$$dAthens : Ohio University Press, [2015]$$z9780821421819 000768035 830_0 $$aOhio University Press series in ecology and history. 000768035 852__ $$bebk 000768035 85640 $$3ProQuest Ebook Central Academic Complete$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://site.ebrary.com/lib/usiricelib/Doc?id=11117913$$zOnline Access 000768035 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:768035$$pGLOBAL_SET 000768035 980__ $$aEBOOK 000768035 980__ $$aBIB 000768035 982__ $$aEbook 000768035 983__ $$aOnline
