Holding guards and civilian employees hostage, the prisoners negotiated with officials for improved conditions during the four long days and nights that followed. On September 13, the state abruptly sent hundreds of heavily armed troopers and correction officers to retake the prison by force. Their gunfire killed thirty-nine men--hostages as well as prisoners--and severely wounded more than one hundred others. In the ensuing hours, weeks, and months, troopers and officers brutally retaliated against the prisoners. Ultimately, New York State authorities prosecuted only the prisoners, never once bringing charges against the officials involved in the retaking and its aftermath and neglecting to provide support to the survivors and the families of the men who had been killed. Drawing from more than a decade of extensive research, historian Heather Ann Thompson sheds new light on every aspect of the uprising and its legacy, giving voice to all those who took part in this 45-year fight for justice: prisoners, former hostages, families of the victims, lawyers and judges, and state officials and members of law enforcement. This book is the first full account of one of the most important civil rights stories of the last century.--Adapted from dust jacket. 000771552 520__ $$a"Historian Heather Ann Thompson offers the first definitive telling of the Attica prison uprising, the state's violent response, and the victims' decades-long quest for justice--in time for the forty-fifth anniversary of the events"--$$cProvided by publisher. 000771552 586__ $$aPulitzer Prize, 2017. 000771552 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000771552 61020 $$aAttica Prison. 000771552 650_0 $$aPrison riots$$zNew York (State) 000771552 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aThompson, Heather Ann, 1963-$$tBlood in the water.$$bFirst edition.$$dNew York : Pantheon, 2016$$z9780375423222$$w(DLC) 2016000477$$w(OCoLC)945169854 000771552 852__ $$bacq 000771552 85280 $$bebk$$hEBSCOhost 000771552 85640 $$3eBooks on EBSCOhost$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&AN=1104398$$zOnline Access 000771552 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:771552$$pGLOBAL_SET 000771552 980__ $$aEBOOK 000771552 980__ $$aBIB 000771552 982__ $$aEbook 000771552 983__ $$aOnline 000771552 994__ $$a92$$bISE
