Summary
"This book presents a detailed examination of counter-terrorism as a form of conflict transformation, drawing on extensive data generated from over 130 in-depth interviews with police officers, policy officials, youth workers, community members and young people, conducted over a five-year period. The majority of the primary data underpinning the study was collected in Britain and focuses specifically on responding to and preventing Al Qaeda linked terrorism. However, the scope of the book is considerable wider, encompassing a variety of international contexts including the US, Australia and Northern Ireland, and drawing lessons which are equally applicable to other forms of terrorism or extreme violence, including politically-motivated hate crime and gang violence. They key themes of the book are the importance of credibility for those engaged in counter-terrorism initiatives; the efficacy of partnerships between police and communities; the role of citizenship, responsibility and trust in community-based approaches; and issues of human rights and governance. Above all, the responsibility between state and non-state actors. Spalek highlights the essential strategies for building effective relationships, drawing particular attention to the role of 'connectors' - individuals able to negotiate cooperation between disparate groups for common goals. The book is unique in the literature in presenting the real-life experiences of community members and other practitioners in peace-building, in their own voices"--Page 4 of cover.
