It highlights in what way the connection between Darwin and the Galapagos has had real, enduring and paradoxical effects in the Archipelago. This Twenty Century construct of the Galapagos as the cradle of Darwin theory and insights triggered not only the definition of the Galapagos as a living natural laboratory but also the production of a series of conservation practices and the reshaping of the Galapagos as a tourism destination with an increasingly important flow of tourists that potentially threaten its fragile ecosystems. The book argues that the idea of a Darwinian living laboratory has been limited by the success of the very same constructs that promote its conservation. It suggests critical interpretations of this paradox by questioning many of the dichotomies that have been created to understand nature and its conservation. ßWe also explore some possible ways in which Darwin's ideas can be used to better understand the social and natural threats facing the Islands and to develop sustainable and successful management practices. 000777438 588__ $$aOnline resource; title from PDF title page (viewed November 1, 2016). 000777438 60010 $$aDarwin, Charles,$$d1809-1882$$xInfluence. 000777438 650_0 $$aEvolution (Biology) 000777438 650_0 $$aBiodiversity$$zGalapagos Islands. 000777438 650_0 $$aNatural history$$zGalapagos Islands. 000777438 651_0 $$aGalapagos Islands. 000777438 7001_ $$aQuiroga, Diego. 000777438 7001_ $$aSevilla, Ana María. 000777438 77608 $$iPrint version:$$tDarwin, Darwinism and conservation in the Galapagos Islands.$$d[Cham, Switzerland] : Springer, 2016$$z9783319340500$$z3319340506$$w(OCoLC)946482365 000777438 830_0 $$aSocial and ecological interactions in the Galapagos Islands. 000777438 852__ $$bebk 000777438 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-34052-4$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000777438 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:777438$$pGLOBAL_SET 000777438 980__ $$aEBOOK 000777438 980__ $$aBIB 000777438 982__ $$aEbook 000777438 983__ $$aOnline 000777438 994__ $$a92$$bISE
