Using a model of occupational crowding, the book outlines how the representation of African American men in major occupational categories almost universally declined during the recent recession even as white non-Hispanic men were able to maintain their occupational representation in the face of staggering job losses. Using US Census Bureau data, this book illustrates how African American men sought to insulate their group from devastating job losses by increasing their educational attainment in a job market where employers exercised more leverage in hiring. However, this strategy was unable to protect this group from disparate job losses as African American men became further marginalized in the workforce during the Great Recession. Policy approaches to address high African American male unemployment are outlined in the final chapter. 000777876 588__ $$aDescription based on print version record. 000777876 650_0 $$aLabor market$$zUnited States$$xHistory. 000777876 650_0 $$aAfrican American men$$xHistory. 000777876 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aHolder, Michelle.$$tAfrican American men and the labor market during the Great Recession.$$dNew York, NY : Palgrave Macmillan, [2017]$$z9781137563101$$w(DLC) 2016957282$$w(OCoLC)967770580 000777876 830_0 $$aPalgrave pivot. 000777876 852__ $$bebk 000777876 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1057/978-1-137-56311-8$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000777876 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:777876$$pGLOBAL_SET 000777876 980__ $$aEBOOK 000777876 980__ $$aBIB 000777876 982__ $$aEbook 000777876 983__ $$aOnline 000777876 994__ $$a92$$bISE
