Falsely perceived as a one-dimensional function of static state power, it is here revealed that asylum decisions at borders respond to a complex cultural construction, saturated by a meta-message of disbelief, denial and moral panics. The author demonstrates that immigration officers’ work patterns, behavior and decisions are informed by such stereotyping, which has led to asylum narratives being interpreted in the light of concepts of social acceptability and rejection. Establishing a parallel with law enforcement, the author argues that this process replicates a professional world of categorization and control, forged within an autonomous immigration service subculture. This timely work will appeal to students and scholars of migration studies, identity and ethnic studies, social anthropology, sociology, law and policy studies. 000779270 588__ $$aVendor-supplied metadata. 000779270 650_0 $$aPolitical refugees$$xPublic opinion. 000779270 650_0 $$aAsylum, Right of$$xPublic opinion. 000779270 77608 $$iPrint version:$$aJubany, Olga.$$tScreening asylum in a culture of disbelief.$$z9783319407470$$z3319407473$$w(OCoLC)950954070 000779270 852__ $$bebk 000779270 85640 $$3SpringerLink$$uhttps://univsouthin.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://link.springer.com/10.1007/978-3-319-40748-7$$zOnline Access$$91397441.1 000779270 909CO $$ooai:library.usi.edu:779270$$pGLOBAL_SET 000779270 980__ $$aEBOOK 000779270 980__ $$aBIB 000779270 982__ $$aEbook 000779270 983__ $$aOnline 000779270 994__ $$a92$$bISE
